Stainless steel floating balls are typically used in various industrial applications where they are exposed to harsh environments, such as corrosive liquids or gases. The anti-corrosion principle of stainless steel floating balls lies in the inherent corrosion-resistant properties of the material.
Stainless steel is an alloy of iron, chromium, and other elements, such as nickel, molybdenum, and manganese, that are added to improve its corrosion resistance. Chromium is the primary element responsible for the corrosion resistance of stainless steel, as it forms a thin, protective layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the steel that prevents further oxidation and corrosion.
In the case of stainless steel floating balls, the surface of the ball is constantly exposed to the corrosive environment, but the chromium oxide layer on the surface of the ball protects it from further corrosion. This is because the oxide layer is extremely hard and stable, and it is also self-healing, which means that if it is damaged or scratched, it will reform quickly to protect the underlying steel.
Additionally, stainless steel floating balls may be electropolished or passivated to improve their anti-corrosion properties. Electropolishing is a process that involves removing a thin layer of surface metal through electrochemical reactions, which creates a smoother, cleaner surface that is less prone to corrosion. Passivation involves treating the surface of the steel with an acid solution to remove contaminants and create a more passive, corrosion-resistant surface.
