What is the difference between ball valve, gate valve and globe valve?

Valves are used to control the flow of liquids and gases. Ball, gate and globe valves are used to control the flow of liquid. These various forms of valves are used to create waterways, so it is important to understand these differences and their use.

Introduction to ball valve

The ball valve made of solid components has high durability and can function perfectly even after being idle for a long time. It has a ball made of brass, stainless steel or chrome plated brass, embedded in the catheter. At the top of the ball is a lever that can only be shaken by a quarter of a turn. When the horizontal plane is parallel to the pipe, the sphere allows water to flow. When the lever is perpendicular to the pipe, the solid ball will stop the flow of water. Control the flow by moving the lever from 0 to 90 degrees from the angle of the pipe to which it is connected.

On the other hand, you can keep the lever between 2 limits to allow water to flow partially through the pipe, but the pipe may deform due to water pressure.

The advantage of this valve is that you can easily and quickly open or close it. However, the water will hammer at the sides of the sphere and pipe all the time, unless it is fully opened to guide the water.

Introduction to stop valve

The globe valve is a wheel based valve. When opened, the valve reduces the water flow through the pipe through a set of fixed ring seats fixed in the spherical body. The globe valve consists of a spherical area which is divided into two halves by an opening forming the seat. On this seat, the plug can be tightened with a runner that controls or completely stops the flow of water.

It is difficult to understand whether the globe valve is open or closed, especially when it is partially open. In addition, it cannot be operated by one hand like a ball valve.

Introduction of gate valve

Gate valves are used to control the flow of liquid and are usually operated by turning the wheel and moving the gate valve up and down. When the wheel is turned to lower the gate, the water wheel reaches the lowest position, which stops the flow of water. When the wheel is operated in the opposite direction, the ram is in the highest position and the water can flow freely.

By looking at the rising stem that is part of the gate valve, it is easy to know which position the gate valve is in. If the stem is up and visible, the gate valve is open; if the stem is not visible, the gate valve is closed.

The gate valve is in contact with the running water and is therefore highly susceptible to corrosion, subsequent failure and eventual rupture. Because of its slow operation, the chance of water hammer is negligible. It should be used in open or closed condition. If it is not kept properly, it may be damaged by water pressure and vibration.
